Your vaginal microbiome is one of the most precisely balanced ecosystems in the human body. It maintains a narrow, acidic pH window of approximately 3.8–4.5 — and when that window is breached, even temporarily, the consequences range from minor irritation to chronic infection. The everyday products most women use are breaching it constantly.

The Vaginal Microbiome: A Crash Course
The vaginal microbiome is dominated by Lactobacillus species — primarily L. crispatus, L. iners, L. jensenii, and L. gasseri. These bacteria produce lactic acid as a metabolic byproduct, which is what maintains the vaginal environment at its characteristic low pH. This acidity is not incidental — it is the primary defence mechanism of the vaginal tract.
At a pH of 3.8–4.5, most pathogenic bacteria and fungi cannot survive. When the pH rises — due to semen (pH ~7.2), menstrual blood (pH ~7.4), or the use of alkaline products — this protective barrier weakens. The window of vulnerability that follows is when bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and other opportunistic infections are most likely to establish themselves.

Why Most Intimate Wipes Fail the Biology Test
The wet wipe market is enormous — valued at over $4 billion globally — and a significant portion of it is marketed directly to women for intimate use. The problem is that most of these products were not designed with vaginal pH as a primary consideration. They were designed around shelf stability, fragrance performance, and manufacturing cost.
The preservative problem
Wet wipes require preservatives to prevent microbial growth within the product itself — an ironic necessity given that they're meant to support intimate hygiene. The preservatives most commonly used, including methylisothiazolinone (MI) and various parabens, are known contact allergens at the concentrations required to be effective. The EU has restricted MI in leave-on products due to sensitisation rates; many conventional wipes use it in rinse-off formulations that effectively become leave-on products on intimate tissue.
The fragrance trap
Fragrance is one of the leading causes of vulvar contact dermatitis. The International Contact Dermatitis Research Group identifies it as a top allergen in dermatological testing. Yet the majority of intimate wipes sold globally contain fragrance compounds — either because manufacturers haven't prioritised the clinical literature, or because consumers have been conditioned to associate fragrance with cleanliness.
The two are not the same thing. A wipe can be clinically effective and fragrance-free. A wipe can smell pleasant and be actively harmful. The presence of fragrance tells you nothing about a product's ability to clean — and often signals the presence of compounds your intimate tissue would be better without.

The Cascade Effect of Chronic pH Disruption
A single use of an alkaline product won't typically cause lasting damage — the vaginal microbiome is resilient. The problem is cumulative, habitual use. Women who use conventional wet wipes daily, especially after intimacy or during menstruation, may be persistently disrupting their microbiome without ever connecting their product choices to the recurring infections they experience.
Bacterial vaginosis and the pH connection
BV is the most common vaginal condition in women of reproductive age, affecting an estimated 21–29% of American women at any given time. It is characterised by a shift in the vaginal microbiome away from Lactobacillus dominance and toward a polymicrobial community. Elevated vaginal pH is both a trigger and a marker of BV. Products that consistently raise pH are, in effect, creating conditions in which BV is more likely to occur and recur.
Yeast infections and disrupted defences
Candida albicans is present in the vaginal tract of approximately 20% of women without causing symptoms — it is kept in check by the acidic Lactobacillus-dominated environment. When that environment is disrupted, Candida can proliferate. Women who experience recurrent yeast infections are often advised to review their hygiene products — and frequently, the switch to pH-appropriate products is the intervention that breaks the cycle.
How to Read an Intimate Product Label for pH Safety
Most product labels don't list pH. Here is how to assess a product's likely pH impact from the ingredient list alone:
Red flags on the ingredient list
Avoid products containing: sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) — both alkaline detergents frequently found in cleansing products. Fragrance or parfum — a catch-all term that can encompass dozens of undisclosed compounds. Methylisothiazolinone or methylchloroisothiazolinone — preservatives with documented sensitisation risk. Alcohol (ethanol) at high concentrations — drying and pH-disrupting on intimate tissue.
Green flags on the ingredient list
Look for: Lactic acid or citric acid — these are pH-adjusting agents that signal a manufacturer who understands intimate physiology. Glycerin — a humectant that supports skin barrier function. Aloe vera — soothing and pH-compatible with intimate tissue. Preservative systems using phenoxyethanol at low concentrations — generally better tolerated than isothiazolinone-based systems.
